Part 3 · Grammar
會 = talking about your habits & routines 🔁
Here 會 isn't really "will" in the future-tense sense — it describes what someone usually / regularly does. It shows up almost every sentence in this passage.
(Time word)+會+Verb
= usually/regularly do something — a routine, not a one-time future plan
我平時會八點起身。ngo5 ping4 si4 wui5 baat3 dim2 hei2 san1.I usually get up at 8.
我一個星期會上一至兩次韓文堂。ngo5 jat1 go3 sing1 kei4 wui5 soeng5 jat1 zi3 loeng5 ci3 hon4 man4 tong4.I take Korean class 1–2 times a week.
我通常日日會做半個鐘普拉提。ngo5 tung1 soeng4 jat6 jat6 wui5 zou6 bun3 go3 zung1 pou2 laai1 tai4.I usually do 30 minutes of Pilates every day.
💡 Notice the pattern
Words like 平時 (ping4 si4, "usually"), 有時 (jau5 si4, "sometimes"), 通常 (tung1 soeng4, "usually"), and 日日 (jat6 jat6, "every day") team up with 會 to describe routines. Take one away and the sentence still works — but together, they're how Cantonese says "this is just what I do."
Part 3 · Grammar
Verb + 下 (haa5) = "a little bit / for a while" ☺️
Adding 下 right after a verb softens it — it turns "do X" into "do a bit of X" or "do X for a while." It makes an action sound casual and relaxed, not a big deal.
Verb+下
= do a bit of… / do… for a while
聽下啲ASMR。teng1 haa5 di1 ASMR.Listen to a bit of ASMR.
我會整下早餐。ngo5 wui5 zing2 haa5 zou2 caan1.I'll whip up some breakfast.
同佢按摩下。tung4 keoi5 on3 mo1 haa5.Give him a little massage.
💡 Compare with and without 下
整早餐。 zing2 zou2 caan1 → Make breakfast. (plain, neutral)
整下早餐。 zing2 haa5 zou2 caan1 → Whip up a bit of breakfast. (casual, no big deal)
Part 3 · Grammar
首先…然後…之後…跟住 — telling a story in order 🗺️
This whole passage is just one routine told step by step. These four words are the glue that connects each step to the next — learn them as a set.
首先
sau2 sin1
first
然後
jin4 hau6
then
之後
zi1 hau6
after that
跟住
gan1 zyu6
next, following that
In practice, 然後 and 之後 are used fairly interchangeably to mean "then / after that" — Cantonese speakers move between them freely, the way English speakers mix up "then" and "after that."
