01故事 My story

Hi, I’m Wincy —
your Cantobestie.

01 · 土生土長 — born & raised

Hong Kong made, Cantonese first.

Cantonese is my first language — the language of my family, my city, and my favourite memories. Sharing it with people around the world is the best part of what I do.

02 · 教學 — the teacher

Teaching is my thing.

Pilates instructor, personal trainer, and a University of Hong Kong education graduate — I’ve spent years helping people master new skills with confidence.

03 · 學生 — a student, again

I’m learning, too.

I moved to Seoul and started learning Korean from zero. The nerves, the forgotten words, the little wins — I live them every week, just like you will.

“I know how it feels to understand everything in your head — and still struggle to say it out loud.”

— me, learning Korean in Seoul. It’s made me a far more patient teacher.
04 · 因材施教 — how I teach

Your goals set the menu.

No single method fits everyone. Real conversations, real-life situations, zero pressure — so you speak naturally instead of just memorising.

05 · 傾偈 — let’s chat

The rest? I’ll tell you over a lesson.

傾偈 king1 gai2 means chatting like friends do — which is, honestly, the whole method.

“She doesn’t just teach from the book — she teaches how real people actually speak in daily life.”

Just finished another Cantonese class with Wincy, and honestly she’s a gem of a tutor. She’s super patient, funny, and always finds ways to make each lesson feel easy and enjoyable — even when my tones go all over the place.

I told her I wanted to focus more on speaking and pronunciation, and she’s been amazing at personalising the lessons to fit what I need. Looking forward to her next class.

“Every class you’re gonna feel yourself improve — and be surprised with how much you already know in such a relatively short time.”

Wincy, for me, is a teacher every beginner needs. Her classes are structured, detailed, balanced for your knowledge level and, most important, they make sense. She doesn’t jump ahead or make you feel like you learn nothing.

She’s not my first teacher, but I certainly wished she was — her approach to work is what I needed all along to improve my Cantonese enough to impress my girlfriend, who’s a native Cantonese speaker.

What I believed was an impossible task, now I believe is very possible. I very strongly recommend Wincy to everyone, especially beginners.

“Her approach to teaching is thorough and precise — and most importantly, she is incredibly patient.”

Wincy is an amazing teacher. Her background as someone who is perfectly bilingual in both English and Cantonese ensures you truly understand new words, using both languages to provide clear context and examples.

Wincy is also very passionate about what she does and makes sure that each lesson stays engaging from start to finish.

Wincy is an excellent language tutor who is always well-prepared. The materials are personalised to suit your individual learning needs, making each lesson immediately applicable to your situation. Her energy and delivery motivate me to learn even after a long day at work.

Her insight into Hong Kong culture, colloquial language, and degrees of formality has been tremendously helpful when navigating both personal and professional conversations.

For instance, I requested specific terminology relevant to my field of work, and she provided a sheet with phrases and vocabulary that I was able to use the very next day.

“She teaches real Cantonese — not just what’s written in textbooks.”

Without a doubt, Wincy is a fantastic and dedicated Cantonese teacher. Not only is she exceptionally engaging, articulate, and well organised, but she is also patient and kind.

She is very knowledgeable in the “real” way Hong Kongers speak — as opposed to the more formal style that is rarely used but often found in apps and textbooks — and provides great insights into Hong Kong culture. I couldn’t be happier with the progress so far.

“You can feel she really cares about your progress.”

Wincy has great energy, which makes taking lessons with her really fun and interactive. She is well prepared with her lesson material, and makes good suggestions to improve your Business Cantonese speech as well as your public speaking skills. I would highly recommend her as your teacher.

04秘方 The house recipe

A recipe that starts
with you.

No frozen syllabus, reheated for everyone. Four courses, made from scratch — shaped around your life, your goals, and your taste.

ting1 · listen

Course 01 · 睇餐牌 — browse the menuWe start with you

Before anything else, we talk. Your goals, your level, the moments you want Cantonese for — a market in Mong Kok, a meeting, a mother-in-law. Everything that follows is built on this conversation.

You’ll speak Cantonese within the first lesson — even if it’s your very first word.

coi4 · tailor

Course 02 · 落單 — place your orderMade to order

I prepare your materials from scratch — vocabulary from your world, dialogues from situations you’ll actually face. Nothing photocopied, nothing generic. Students have used their new phrases at work the very next day.

Like a good tailor: measured first, made to fit, adjusted as you grow.

gong2 · speak

Course 03 · 開餐 — dig inYou talk, from day one

Lessons are conversations, not lectures. We speak, stumble, laugh, and correct — in a pressure-free room where mistakes are the raw material of progress, and tricky tones get untangled together.

Understanding it in your head is step one. Saying it out loud is the lesson.

wut6 · live

Course 04 · 打包 — take it with youLanguage you can live in

Beyond words: culture, humour, degrees of formality, the unwritten rules of the city. You leave each lesson with notes to keep — and Cantonese you can use tonight, not someday.

The goal was never the vocabulary list. It’s the conversation it unlocks.

Six tones, one syllable — hear the music in it

六聲 · luk6 sing1 — hover to trace each tone
si1poem

si3to try
si4time
si5market
si6matter

Same syllable, six different words. Don’t worry — we train your ear one tone at a time, and your tones are allowed to wobble here.

05旅程 The journey

Where a year of
hellos can take you.

學習線 · Learning Line5 stations · 你好 → 屋企
Lesson one

Your first words 你好

A greeting, your name, a real exchange in Cantonese — small, but entirely yours. Most students are surprised it happens this soon.

Month one

Everyday essentials 早晨

Greetings, numbers, ordering, thanking — the small currency of daily life, with tones that are starting to behave.

Month three

Small talk, real talk 傾偈

Taxis, markets, dim sum orders. You make small talk with locals — and start catching familiar words in the noise of the city.

Month six

Longer conversations 講故

Opinions, stories, plans. You watch Hong Kong shows and understand more than you miss. People stop switching to English.

Year one & beyond

It starts to feel like home 屋企

Cantonese stops feeling like a subject and starts feeling like a place you live. Some days, you even catch yourself thinking in it.

Everyone moves at their own pace — this is a typical path, not a promise. We’ll shape yours together.

06常餐 The usual questions

Everyone
orders these.

Something else on your mind?
Write to me — I read everything.

Better than okay — beginners are some of my favourite students to work with. We start from zero: sounds, tones, and simple phrases you can use immediately. No prior experience needed, and no such thing as a silly question.

The real, living Cantonese spoken in Hong Kong today — the way locals actually talk, rather than the formal style found in many apps and textbooks. You’ll learn with jyutping romanisation, and traditional characters if reading and writing are part of your goals.

One-on-one, online, over video call — 50 minutes each. Every lesson comes with materials I prepare specifically for you, so there’s nothing to buy and nothing generic. You’ll leave each lesson with notes you can review any time.

Then you’re exactly who these lessons were built for. As a Korean learner myself, I know the fear of saying it wrong out loud — I live it every week in Seoul. My lessons are a pressure-free zone: mistakes aren’t embarrassing here, they’re the raw material of progress.

Almost certainly — I teach students from Hong Kong to London to Melbourne. Tell me your availability and we’ll find a rhythm that fits your life.

Book a 50-minute introductory lesson (USD 19). We’ll talk about your goals, I’ll get a feel for your level, and you’ll get a feel for how I teach — you’ll speak your first Cantonese before it ends. From there, we design your path together.

Totally fine — life happens. Every booking confirmation includes a Reschedule link; click it and pick a new time from my open calendar, no charge, no awkward emails. Just use Reschedule rather than Cancel — cancelling and booking again counts as a new purchase.

You’ll get a personal booking link by email right after you purchase. Use it for your first lesson, then come back to that same link whenever you’re ready for the next one — a week later, a month later, whatever suits you. No need to plan out every date in advance.
